Spartanburg, S.C. – After finishing the weekend 3-0 and tossing a perfect game against Virginia, USC Upstate senior hurler Hannah Alexander has been named the co-Pitcher of the Week for softball by the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Alexander was simply sensational in the opening weekend of the season. Upstate finished the weekend 5-0 with Alexander earning the win in three of the games. She did not allow a run the entire weekend and finished her three appearances with 16 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings of work. She began the week by earning the win after getting the start and working four innings in the 8-0, five-inning victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday. She struck out eight Eagles. She then earned the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 innings in the 12-4 victory over Youngstown State Saturday. She struck out two and allowed just one hit.
Alexander’s highlight win came Sunday when she pitched a perfect game in the 8-0, five-inning win over Virginia. It marked her first perfect game and no-hitter in what has been a standout career at Upstate. She struck out six Cavaliers along the way. She became just the third Spartan to throw a perfect game, joining current teammate Anna Miller (Jacksonville State, 2013) and Kristy Middgah (North Greenville, 2002) as the only Spartans to throw a perfect game in the history of the program. Previously, Alexander had settled for six one-hitters in her career.
Alexander has now won A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors three times in her career.
Florida Gulf Coast’s Kelsey Carpenter was named the A-Sun Player of the Week, while Jacksonville’s Victoria Brown shared co-Pitcher of the Week honors with Alexander.
