Bears’ Bethany Sullinger Named MVC Softball Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri State sophomore first baseman Bethany Sullinger was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday (February 17). Sullinger took over the clean-up spot in the lineup over the weekend at the UTA Maverick Invitational and sparked the Bears to a 5-0 weekend.

She hit a scorching .625 over the five games racking up 10 hits and had a slugging percentage of 1.250. In Friday’s opening game, she hit a two-run home run, driving in three total in a two-hit outing. In the nightcap on Friday, Sullinger slammed two home runs and drove in four runs against the 2013 MAC Champion and 2014 MAC favorite Central Michigan.

On Saturday, she picked up three hits and an RBI in each game against South Dakota State. For her encore on Sunday, she went 3-for-3 and scored twice to lead the Bears to the championship.

Sullinger was spectacular on defense as well, flawlessly fielding all 42 chances at first base. She hit safely in all five games and drove in nine runs on the weekend and set career highs in hits, runs scored and RBI.

Missouri State (6-2) travels to Memphis for the Blues City Classic starting on Friday (Feb. 21). The Bears will face Morehead State, Alabama A&M, Appalachian State, host-Memphis and Lipscomb at the BCC. The Bears’ home opener is slated for March 12 vs. SIU Edwardsville at 5:00 p.m.
