KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Rainey Gaffin threw a no-hitter in her first collegiate start in the circle and Taylor Koenig hit a three-run bomb to lead No. 3/2 Tennessee to an 8-0, six-inning win over Wright State in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Gaffin was brilliant in the circle in Game 2, tossing a six-strikeout no-hitter over six frames to lead UT to an 8-0 win over Wright State. Gaffin is the first UT pitcher to throw a no-no in her first collegiate start in the circle since Monica Abbott did it on Feb. 5, 2004, against Saint Mary’s. The no-hitter was the 45th in Tennessee softball history.

The bats were cold for both teams in the first three innings, but the Lady Vols (17-1) scored six in the fourth inning and two in the sixth en route to defeating the Wright State Raiders (1-10) for the third time this season.

Koenig led the team offensively, going 1-for-3 with a three-run home run. Annie Aldrete went 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Megan Geer went 2-for-2 with one RBI.

UT broke through in the fourth inning, scoring six runs to end a scoreless game. With runners on first and second and one out, Cheyanne Tarango hit an RBI single up the middle. Hannah Akamine followed with an RBI double to right field and Koenig put the Lady Vols up 5-0 with a three-run blast to left field. After Haley Tobler hit a double off the wall in center, Geer clubbed an RBI single up the middle.

The game ended in the sixth after Aldrete hit an RBI double to score Geer and Davin hit a sac fly to right to score Madison Shipman.

UT will next host the Tennessee Tournament from March 7-9 at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Tennessee will face Holy Cross and Campbell on Friday, Western Kentucky on Saturday and Georgia Southern and College of Charleston on Sunday.
