HOUSTON – After falling 3-0 in extra innings to No. 12 Baylor, Houston rebounded with a 3-2 win over the Bears to split the Tuesday doubleheader at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston improved to 24-11 on the season and Baylor moves to 29-6.

BAYLOR 3, HOUSTON 0 (8) – BOX SCORE
Houston’s Julana Shrum had a no-hit bid spoiled in the eighth inning and the shutout was lost to the next batter as Shrum suffered a tough loss to fall to 8-4 on the year. The sophomore threw a career high seven strikeouts and allowed only three hits – all in the eighth inning after a nearly perfect first seven innings.

Both teams struggled adjusting to the windy conditions at Cougar Softball Stadium as the two teams combined for only seven hits and 20 strikeouts. Houston’s Katie St. Pierre seemed the only player unaffected by the gusts as the Cougars’ center fielder went 3-for-3 for her 11th multiple hit game of the season.

The loss ended Houston’s season-high 11 game winning streak that dated back to the Cougars’ last contest that went to extra innings, a 6-5 loss to No. 8 Arizona one month ago on March 8.

Baylor’s Whitney Canion threw 13 strikeouts in the eight-inning effort to improve to 16-5 on the year.

Kendra Cullum took two more hit by pitches in the game with both beanballs resulting in runs for the home team as she continues her climb up the NCAA record books taking her 80th of her career.

Cullum’s first hit by the pitch came with the bases loaded following three straight singles by Jordan Rains, Katie St. Pierre and Selena Hernandez. The RBI hit batter gave Houston a 1-0 lead and the Cougars stretched the lead to 2-0 after Haley Outon’s single during the third inning.

Cullum was hit by a pitch the next time she came up to the plate in the fifth inning. The Conroe, Texas, native scored as a result of the free pass as Haley Outon came up with a double for her second RBI of the game and made the game a 3-1 score for Houston.

Baylor scored a run in the seventh inning and threatened with two runners in scoring position before Houston’s Julana Shrum snuffed out the comeback attempt getting the final two outs of the game to earn the win.

Shrum came in the game during the fourth inning and picked up her ninth win of the year (9-4).
