Mickey Dean Hires Annie Smith to Auburn coaching staff

Two days after new Auburn Head Coach Mickey Dean hired Gerry Glasco away from Texas A&M. Dean appoints Annie Smith to the coaching staff.

“We’re excited to have Annie join our program,” Dean said in Auburn press release. “She’s had the experience of coaching in the Southeastern Conference. She’s had experience as a head coach and was the coach of the year in her conference multiple times. I think she is a coach that the players will find it easy to relate to.”

Smith had been the Head Coach at Georgia Southern the last six seasons going 176-166 making the NCAA Tournament twice. She guided the Eagles to Southern Conference titles in 2012 and 2014 and conference tournament titles in 2012 and 2013 before going 24-29 overall and 12-15 in the Sun Belt last season. Smith joined LSU staff as a volunteer coach this off-season.

Smith served this past summer as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).  Smith has experience coaching in the SEC as before Georgia Southern; Smith spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State before being promoted to associate head coach following the 2007 season. Smith helped the Bulldogs to 295 victories and six NCAA Regional appearances during her time in Starkville.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to work with Coach Dean and Auburn University,” Smith said in Auburn press release. “He has a great vision for the program. Auburn is a great university with a great softball program and in the best softball conference in the country.”

It completes busy first week for Dean as Tigers Head Coach as he targeted coaches who have experience coaching in the Southeast and accomplished his goal by getting Smith and Glasco earlier this week taking him away from Texas A&M.
