ROSEMOUNT, Ill. – Minnesota softball senior pitcher Sara Moulton was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. It is the first weekly conference honor for the Golden Gophers in 2014 and is the seventh Pitcher of the Week laurel that Moulton has earned in her career after she won it in back-to-back weeks as a junior in 2013.

Moulton kicked off her senior season strong last weekend, propelling the Gophers to three shutout victories, including two that were decided by 1-0 scores. While tossing 21-straight inning without conceding a run, the right-hander racked up 32 strikeouts while yielding just eight hits.

With Moulton in the circle, the Gophers topped 17th-ranked LSU in Baton Rouge before dispatching SIUE and Oklahoma State. She received All-Tiger Classic Tournament Team honors and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, as well.

The dominant weekend vaulted Moulton into a tie for most career wins at Minnesota with 88, a mark she currently shares with Gopher pitching coach Piper Ritter. She also moved up to second in strikeouts in school history with 972 and improved upon her school shutouts (38) and complete games (94) records.

Minnesota is off to its first 5-0 start since 2003 after winning the Tiger Classic.

The Gophers will next hit the field in Las Vegas, N.V. in UNLV’s Easton Desert Classic this weekend. After beginning play in the desert against the host Rebels, Minnesota will sandwich a contest against Boise State between games against two 2013 NCAA Tournament teams, BYU and Florida. The Gators advanced to the Women’s College World Series and entered 2014 ranked third in the nation.
