WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Boilermakers wrapped up a weekend of team bonding and community service with a pair of victories on Sunday to open the fall season.

Purdue spent Saturday at Riley Hospital for Children visiting residents alongside the Notre Dame softball team. The teams also participated in a celebration event for former patients.

The Boilers stayed in Indianapolis and attended the Purdue/Notre Dame football game on Saturday night.

The team wrapped up their fall opening weekend with a pair of wins over Notre Dame and Evansville at the College Game Day Tournament at Grand Park in Westfield.

Purdue topped the Fighting Irish 6-2 as junior Lilly Fecho struck out five in three innings of work and junior Paris Andrew registered two doubles and scored two runs.

The Boilermakers then defeated Evansville 9-3 behind strong pitching efforts by senior Alex Whittemore and freshman Gina Snyder. Whittemore allowed just two hits in three shutout innings, while Snyder struck out four batter in two innings of work. Freshman Kayla Hampton went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.

In 14 innings of work, the Boilermaker pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

Freshman Stephanie Ramsey had three hits and two RBI in the games on her birthday. Freshman Maya Hughes contributed three hits on the day.

“It was a really neat team weekend,” head coach Kim Schuette said. “We played solid defense and built team chemistry with these trips and all three of these experiences.”

The Boilermakers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 21, when they welcome Valparaiso and Ball State to the Boilermaker Softball Complex at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
