Rutgers’ Howard and USF’s Nevins Garner Weekly Softball Honors

USF and Rutgers both rebounded with American Athletic Conference series wins over the weekend, with the Bulls taking three games from Houston and Rutgers two from Memphis. Both teams also garnered the conference’s weekly accolades on Monday, with Rutgers’ Chandler Howard earning her first Player of the Week recognition, while USF’s Sara Nevins was named Pitcher of the Week for a conference-best fifth time.

Howard’s power hitting pushed Rutgers over the top in her team’s doubleheader sweep on April 18, recording home runs in both games. The first homer came at the best possible time, as she jacked a two-run shot to give Rutgers the 3-1 win in the bottom of the eighth inning. Howard also led the Rutgers offense in a 14-2 game two slugfest, contributing with a three-run blast. On the series, she went 6-for-12 with five RBIs with a 1.000 slugging percentage. She also paces the Scarlet Knights with eight homers.

Nevins led the Bulls to a crucial sweep over Houston, which sat atop The American standings prior to the weekend. She earned all three wins, combining to allow only two earned runs with 12 strikeouts and a 0.93 ERA in 15 frames of work. With April 18’s 5-2 victory, Nevins surpassed one of her coaches, Monica Triner, to claim USF’s all-time wins record with 93. On the season, Nevins is 21-7 and leads the league in strikeouts (218), ERA (1.33) and opposing batting average (.150).

Audas helped UCF to a series win over Louisville, delivering in two complete game performances with only two earned runs, 11 Ks and a 1.00 ERA.

Ujvari belted a grand slam in the sixth frame of UCF’s 5-1 win over Louisville, breaking the 0-0 tie to push the Knights to the series-clinching win.
Heather Fyfe, UConn, So., OF
Fyfe’s first career home run came in spectacular fashion, as she knocked a grand slam in UConn’s 12-1 rout of Hartford on April 16. On the week, she batted .333 with seven RBIs on four hits.
Stephanie Huang, Rutgers, So., 2B
Huang had a 6-for-10 week at the plate, recording at least one hit in all three of Rutgers’ games against Memphis, including a 3-for-3 performance in her team’s 14-2 victory.
Stephanie Medina, USF, Sr., 1B
Medina led the Bulls with four RBIs on four hits against Houston, batting .444 on the week with a .545 on base percentage and a .556 slugging percentage.
