Washington Intrasqaud Scrimmage Highlights Fall Camp

By Washington Sports Information

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Huskies softball team put their fall training into practice Thursday, as the hitters got their first chance to see live pitching with a 5-inning intrasquad scrimmage at Wenatchee Valley College.

The “Black” team beat the “Purple” team, 5-0, as senior starting pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby tossed 3 strong innings and senior outfielder Victoria Hayward reached base three times and scored twice.

“Scrimmaging this early in the fall training camp is good, because it really puts meaning behind the ‘Compete everyday’ theme,” head coach Heather Tarr said. “It kind of gives some urgency behind a lot of our fundamentals and our skills that we do in our everyday practices.”

Junior Kasey Stanchek started in the circle for the “Purple” team and allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

“The pitchers were kind of feeling it out at first,” Tarr said. “Kaitlin’s pitch counts were running pretty high and she got behind, but she obviously got out of all the trouble that she got herself into, which is the sign of a great pitcher. It was good to see Kasey get in there and do typically what she does.”

Hayward got the scoring started for the “Black” team in the top of the 1st, as she doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior Hooch Fagaly.

The “Black” team tacked on 2 more runs in both the 4th and 5th innings. With one out in the 4th, Inglesby walked, followed by a run-scoring double by junior Kimberlee Souza and a run-scoring single by junior Courtney Gano. In the 5th, the “Black” team took advantage of two walks, as Hayward and senior Marki Creger-Zier both scored after earning walks.

The Huskies return to action Friday, October 4 as they host 5 teams in the three-day Fall Classic at Husky Softball Stadium. For a full schedule, click here.

Though the fall season is winding down, the Huskies will not be far from the diamond. They will begin hosting hitting and pitching clinics and a defense academy on Tuesday nights in October, as well as an Advanced Pitching Clinic on Sunday, September 22. For complete details, click here.
