NPF Scrap Yard Dawg’s Mother-Daughter Duo

Having a parent coach can be hard.  It is known that mom or dad might be tougher on her or his daughter more than the other girls.  But, imagine playing for parent your whole life and continuing that into your professional career.

Meagan May Whitley grew up in Spring, Texas, and played softball for her mom, Connie May, throughout her childhood.  She followed in her mom’s footsteps and was a student athlete at Texas A&M.

2016 just added a little something sweeter the mother-daughter softball duo.

“Meagan was an acquisition that I made happen,” said General Manager Connie May.  “I wasn’t GM at the time but the GM wasn’t going to do it but I was in charge of scouting and developing the team.”

On January 27, 2016, Whitley was signed to her first professional contract with the Scrap Yard Dawgs.  She signed a three-year contract and doesn’t earn a playing salary because the team employs her.  She lives just down the road from the facility and in her contract wanted it to be known that she wouldn’t be traded. If it gets to the point where she is no longer needed, she will retire.

“There was no guarantee at any point that I would stay on the roster,” Whitley said.  “The fact that I had the track record and was readily available made it a good fit.  Right place, right time kind of thing.”

The contract negotiation started out with Whitley working for her mother at the Dawgs’ facility when May asked her daughter if she wanted to play.

Whitley told her mom she was all in and ready to go; the talks took off from there.

“I’ve always been all business with her, I’m probably harder on her than others because she is a reflection of me,” May said. “ She knows how much I love what I do and she’s committed to making me successful which in turn makes her successful.  She’s one of my best friends and yet at the end of the day, I’m still her mom.”

Whitley played in 33 games and finished with a .273 average.  In 55 at bats, she hit nine home runs and 11 runs batted in.

“I think it was the right fit for the position that they needed.  For me to be in a secondary and fill in when I worked well.  Like I said earlier, right place right time and the right person in that role,” said Whitley.

Meagan May Whitley is currently in her second season as a Professional softball player with the Scrap Yard Dawgs. Connie May is also in her second season as the General Manager. The Dawgs are a favorite to win the Cowels Cup this coming August.
