Size Doesn’t Matter in Softball

Unlike in other sports, size doesn’t necessarily matter in softball. Softball players come in many different shapes and sizes. Being tall doesn’t give a player an advantage, just as being short and on the smaller side doesn’t serve as a disadvantage. There have been successful softball players at all levels who are short, small, strong, and tall. Coaches care more about the skill, heart, and attitude of the players who take the field wearing their uniform, rather than their size.

If you find yourself on the short or smaller side, don’t be discouraged. There are plenty of short softball players who get the opportunity to play DI and Professional softball. There are nine positions on the softball field for a reason, to give players options. Maybe a shorter player wouldn’t make the best first basemen, but her speed gives her an advantage at second base or in the outfield. Sometimes the smaller players are the deadliest in the batter’s box. It’s hard for pitchers to adjust their pitching height to lower in the zone if they aren’t used to it.

Can short girls be softball pitchers? This question comes up a lot in my pitching lessons from concerned parents. Anyone can become a softball pitcher. Softball pitchers who are successful in the sport are the ones who put in the work and who are eager to master the craft. Next time you find yourself at a softball tournament, observe the pitchers at each field. Pitchers are like snowflakes, they come in many different shapes and sizes and not one softball pitcher is the exact same as another. If a pitcher is on the smaller size, she may not pitch as hard as someone who is stronger and taller, but luckily with pitching, there is so much more than just speed.

Can tall girls be catchers? It is assumed that a player with height can’t be a good catcher for a number of reasons. They will block the umpire’s views, the pitcher will throw too high in the zone, they won’t be able to get out of their crouch quick enough, etc. All of these concerns are false. Tall players can be and will be great catchers if they work at it and develop the craft.

Size doesn’t matter in softball. Coaches at every level are going to put players on the field who have the skill, the work ethic, the drive, the heart, and the passion for the game. As players get older and reach the higher levels, if you can hit, you will play. There is always going to be a spot on the field for a player who can produce on the offensive side of the game. No matter what size you bring to the field, always remember you belong and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Prove them wrong, by proving yourself right.
