Tennessee Softball: Chavanne, Gibson Help USA To 11-5 Win Over Canada In Mayor’s Cup

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Raven Chavanne, Lauren Gibson and Team USA are off to a hot start in the Mayor’s Cup after taking an 11-5 win over Canada and a 5-1 triumph over Argentina late Tuesday night at Donna Terry Softball Stadium. 

The Tennessee duo of Chavanne and Gibson played in the win over Canada, which started two and a half hours late due to rain in San Juan. Chavanne started at third base and hit second in the order, going 1-for-4 with a single, a walk, one RBI and two runs. Gibson stated at second base and hit third, going 1-for-3 with one single, one walk, two RBIs and one run.

Chavanne and Gibson did not play in the win over Argentina.

The game marked the summer debut for Tennessee’ co-head coach Karen Weekly, who joined the Team USA staff as an assistant coach this week.

Starter Cheridan Hawkins earned the win for the U.S. after striking out five and allowing three earned runs over three innings. Jessica Moore threw four innings in relief with one strikeout and two runs (one earned) allowed.

Sara Plourde took the loss for Canada after allowing four runs (three earned) and striking out four in two innings. Jocelyn Carter pitched 3.1 relief frames with three earned runs and Marina Demore issued four earned runs in 1.2 innings.

Canada took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the U.S. rallied back with a big six-run third. With two on and no outs, Chavanne drew a six-pitch walk off Plourde to load the bases. Gibson drew a six-pitch walk to bring home Desitinee Martinez for Team USA’s first run. After a pitching change, Amanda Chidester hit an RBI single, Valerie Arioto and Lauren Chamberlain drew a bases-loaded walks, Elizabeth Hudson had an RBI groundout to third, and Kourtney Salvarola hit a sac fly to left field to give Team USA a 6-2 edge.

Canada drew to within 6-4 after Jennifer Yee hit a sac fly in the bottom of the third and Victoria Hayward hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.

The U.S. grew its lead to 8-4 in the top of the sixth. Chavanne hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Taylor Hoagland. Gibson followed with an RBI single to right field to bring in Chavanne.

Canada scored one more run on Yee’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

Team USA put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with three more runs. The Americans scored on an RBI single by Chamberlain and a two-RBI double by Hoagland.

In a late 5-1 win over Argentina, Team USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored again in the third and the fourth. Aimee Creger earned the win after throwing three scoreless innings.

Team USA has two games slated for Wednesday night. The Red, White and Blue will face Cuba at 5 p.m. ET and play host Puerto Rico at 7 p.m. ET. The playoffs in the Mayor’s Cup are on Thursday and Friday.
