Scrap Yard Dogs

Akron, Ohio – July 20th, 2016 – The Dawgs faced off against the Racers in their final game of the series in an afternoon match up.

The Racers scored first to start off the game on a sacrifice fly ball to deep centerfield by Sam Fischer to score Taylor Schlopy who reached base on a walk. Tennessee Alum in her fifth season with the NPF, Madison Shipman, earned the first hit for the Dawgs in the top of the second with a shot just over Racers third baseman, Kelley Montalvo. Lexi Overstreet took one for the team by getting hit by a pitch putting two runners on for designated player, Taylore Fuller who took full advantage of the situation hitting a long ball over the left field fence that tipped the glove of Shellie Robinson (3-1). Meagan May Whitley continued the Dawgs home-run rally with a solo shot to center putting another run on the board (4-1).

A solo homer for former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, Ashley Thomas, put the Dawgs on the board again in the second (4-2). In the bottom of the third, a diving effort from Kiki Stokes in left field on a shot from Sami Fagan landed just under her glove allowing Fagan to reach third base. However, a line drive to Myers and a strikeout to Alex Hugo would leave Fagan stranded.

In the fourth, former Aggie, Cassie Tysarczyk, hit a solo home-run, her second in two games (4-3). A walk to pinch hitter, Geri Ann Glasco put one runner on first. Glasco was then pinch ran for by rookie, Emily Messer who was quickly thrown out at second by catcher, May Whitley attempting to steal. The Dawgs continued to fight in the fifth as Crane took a ball in the back to get on first base. Myers stepped in with a hard shot up the middle to put runners on first and second but the Dawgs could not bring them across the plate.

After four (4) innings of work Rachel Fox gets relief from Monica Abbott in the circle in the bottom of the fifth. Fox ended the game giving up only five hits for three runs with one strikeout and two walks. Despite a hit from Montalvo, Abbott managed a huge out by getting Fagan to pop up to K. Stokes in left field.

Two hits in the sixth from Shipman and Fuller put the pressure on the Racers defense who eventually got out of the jam on a fielder’s choice to second base. An insurance run in the final inning from yet another home run off the bat of Myers put the Dawgs ahead by two (5-3). With Myers’ blast the Dawgs have totaled 21 home runs since they began their two-week road trip. The Dawgs shut down the Racers offense in the bottom of the seventh to sweep Akron in their final series of this road trip.
