Scrap Yard Dogs use Offense to get past Charge
The Scrap Yard Dawgs found the offense it was missing last night in defeating the Texas Charge 7-1 in front of an overflowing crowd at the Christopher Fields Complex in Westminster, Colo. The Dawgs amassed 13 hits in the win that earned the split of the Colorado series against the Charge.
The Colorado air did the Scrap Yard Dawg offense some good as they jumped out right away to a 2-0 lead in the top of the opening frame. Nerissa Myers smacked a one-out double down the first base line for the first hit of the game. Brittany Cervantes was hit by a Lauren Haeger pitch to reach first base. Taylor Edwards then laced a double to the gap in left-center that scored Myers. The Murrieta, Calif. native’s double was her first extra-base hit of the season. Alisa Goler’s sacrifice fly to left scored Cervantes for the second run of the inning for the Dawgs. The Frankfort, Ill. native has amassed six RBIs on the season.
Haeger was the hero at the plate in the first game in Colorado for the Charge and the University of Florida product got yet another RBI against the Dawgs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 2-1. With the bases loaded, Haeger’s sac fly scored Koral Costa, who drew the lead-off walk against Abbott. Costa reached second on a single by Taylor Gadbois and ended up on third from a Bailey Landry single. Landry’s rookie campaign has been a good one, with the former LSU Tiger going 2-for-3 on the night.
The Charge had a shot to tie the game in the third, but Monica Abbott got Nadia Taylor to fly out and Katiyana Mauga to go down swinging for Abbott’s fourth strikeout of the game. The Charge left four runners on base in the loss as Abbott allowed just one run on four hits. The southpaw struck out eight on the night and walked two. Abbott continues to dominate in the circle for the Dawgs, with a 6-0 record and a 0.72 ERA. Abbott leads the NPF in strikeouts with 66.
Haeger took the loss for the Charge, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Two runs gave the Dawgs a bit of breathing room in the top of the fourth inning. Hannah Flippen got things rolling with a bunt single, but the former Utah standout advanced to second on the errant throw to first by Haeger. Flippen scored when Allexis Bennett chopped a ball over Mauga’s head at third base for the RBI single. The Corona, Calif. native’s hit was her second of the night.
The fourth run of the game for the Dawgs came when Myers laid down a bunt right in front of home plate for the single. The throw to first by Charge catcher, Kristyn Sandberg, was mishandled, allowing Bennett to score.
But the Dawgs offense wasn’t done, pushing across three more runs in the top of the sixth. Myers’s single scored Kayla Winkfield, who started the inning with an infield hit. The Petal, Miss. native continues to be an offensive force for the Dawgs, going 3-for-4 on the right with a RBI – her 11th of the season. Meagan May-Whitley’s single to the gap in left center scored Myers and Cervantes to give the Dawgs a 7-1 advantage. The Spring, Tex. native has been on fire for the Dawgs, hitting .500 on the season.
The Dawgs return home to Conroe to take on the league-leading USSA Pride on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Dawgs handed the Pride one of its two losses on the year. All three games begin at 7:05 pm CST.
