2016 NJCAA Division I Softball Championship Day 3 Recap and Top Players of the Day

2016 NJCAA DI Softball Championship

There were eight games played on the third day of the 2016 NJCAA Division I Softball Championship and in the end three were left standing. By the end of today the 2016 Champions will have been crowned.  From a seeding perspective No. 2 Salt Lake, No. 3 Chipola and No. 4 Butler remain.

Quarterfinals

No. 4 Butler 7, No. 8 Yavapai 4

Both teams scored runs but Butler came away with a solid win. First baseman Andrea Sotelo had a good game for Yavapai going 3-4 with a home run and three RBI. They middle of the Butler order did the most damage led by Shortstop Becca Schulte who was 2-4 with a home run and two RBI. The Grizzlies Second baseman Mikayla Waggnor also posted the same line going 2-4 with a home run and two RBI.

No. 3 Chipola 6, No. 2 Salt Lake 5

This game was a battled. The teams were dead locked 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Chipola got two on and critical error resulted in three runs for Chipola proved to be to much for Salt Lake to overcome. In the seventh Salt Lake did make things interesting when Chipola made a critical throwing error themselves. It resulted in two runs for the Bruins, but they were unable to get the tying run across.

Round 5

  • Game 23: No. 7 NE Oklahoma A&M 3, No. 12 San Jacinto-South 1
  • Game 24: No. 1 Tyler 4, No. 6 McLennan 2
  • Game 25: No. 8 Yavapai 7, No. 7 NE Oklahoma A&M 3
  • Game 26: No. 2 Salt Lake 4, No. 1 Tyler 3

Semifinal

No. 4 Butler 10, No. 3 Chipola 0

It was all Butler in the semifinal game. Things really broke open when Butler put up six runs in the third inning. Chipola did get runners on but struggled to move them across the plate. Butler got big games from Shortstop Becca Schulte who was 3-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Designated player Morgan Tyesha was 3-3 with two RBI and a run. Catcher Morgan Heckart was 2-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBI.

  • No. 3 Salt Lake 8, No. 8 Yavapai 3

Players of the Day

  • Hitting: Becca Schulte (Butler) 5-8, 2 HR, 3 runs, 4 RBI
  • Pitcher: Regan Mergele (Butler) 7 innings, 5 Hits, 0 Runs
