5 Teams to Watch for in College Softball This Weekend

Another exciting weekend awaits softball fans. Below are five teams we think you should keep an eye on over the weekend.

No. 2 Tennessee

The Lady Vols are 30-1 on the season and are currently riding a 22 game win streak. Their only game lost on the season was on February 17th against Florida Atlantic. Tennessee began their SEC schedule by sweeping Missouri in a three-game series two weeks ago. The Lady Vols will face off against South Carolina this upcoming weekend in another three-game series. Caylan Arnold had the hot hand for the Lady Vols this past weekend at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Hawaii. The sophomore went 2-0 with 21 strikeouts in five appearances at the classic. Arnold is 13-0 on the season, which ties her for the lead in conference wins. She is leading the SEC with 137 strikeouts and has picked up two Pitcher of the Week Honors.

No. 4 Georgia

The Georgia softball team heads into the weekend with a 27-2 record after defeating Georgia Southern in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday. The Bulldog offense has been on fire this season. Four hitters are batting over .400 with Kendall Burton leading the way with an impressive .488. This past weekend Georgia earned two wins against SEC powerhouse Florida. The offense put up 17 runs over the three games against one of the best pitching staffs in the country. Brittany Gray is leading the Bulldog pitching staff with a 13-0 record, 0.25 ERA, 110 strikeouts and a .125 batting average against. Georgia will face Mississippi State in a three-game series that is set to kick off on Friday.

No. 7 Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners are 25-2 and have won 16 straight games as they open conference play with a home series against Texas Tech. The Sooners are coming off a 5-0 weekend at the Easton Tournament in Fullerton, California. OU also defeated Cal St. Northridge on Monday in 11 innings. Senior pitcher Paige Parker is currently 13-1 on the season and earned three wins in three starts this past weekend. Parker did not give up a run in 14.2 innings pitched. Sydney Romero was on fire at the plate this past weekend. The junior went 10-for-16 at the plate (.625) to improve her season batting average to .532 through 26 games.

No. 10 Arizona State

Arizona State will continue Pac-12 play this weekend with a three-game series against the No. 20 California Golden Bears in Berkeley, Ca, Friday through Sunday. The Sun Devils enter the weekend sitting in second place in the Pac-12 standings after taking 2-of-3 from top-ranked (and previously undefeated) Washington last weekend. The Sun Devils shutout the No. 1 Huskies, 2-0, on both Saturday and Monday to claim their first series win over Washington since the since 2013. Sophomore pitcher, G Juarez, has been lights out in the circle for the Sun Devils in 2018. In the last seven days, Juarez has posted a perfect 3-0 record, struck out 32 batters, and allowed just two walks and eight hits. On the season, Juarez has struck out 130 batters, a mark that ranks No. 9 in the country, and third in the Pac-12.

No. 21 Ohio State

The Buckeyes are 19-4 on the season heading into their Big Ten weekend series at Indiana. This past weekend Ohio state went 2-2 at the Easton Invitational and defeated Cal State Fullerton and CSUN. Junior shortstop Lilli Piper started all seven games last week and led the team in nearly every category with a .565 batting average, 13 hits, nine RBI, eight runs, three homers, 1.043 slugging percentage, .577 on-base percentage and 1.000 fielding percentage. She had at least one hit in six games and added four multi-RBI games. During a three-game stretch, she was a perfect 9-for-9 with five runs, five RBI, two doubles and a home run. Morgan Ray is leading the Buckeye pitching staff with an 11-3 record, a 1.49 ERA, a .168 batting average against, and 86 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched.
