5 Things You May Have Missed in College Softball Friday

The DI College Softball teams are well into their conference play all across the country. Below are five things that stood out to us at FPN, that you may have missed from Friday’s play.

PITT Snaps FSU’s Conference Streak

The University of Pittsburgh used a 1-0, extra-innings victory to hand No. 10 Florida State its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) loss of the season and snap the Seminoles 36-game conference win streak dating back to the 2016 season. The victory also marked the Panthers’ first in program history against the Seminoles. Pitt (20-14-1, 9-4 ACC) split its doubleheader against Florida State (32-7, 10-1 ACC), dropping game one 2-1 after a walk-off by the Seminoles before earning a 1-0 extra-inning victory in game two. The Panthers and Seminoles will meet for the rubber match on Sunday April 8th with first pitch starting at noon.

Nebraska Hands Indiana First Big Ten Loss

The Nebraska softball team (26-12, 4-3 Big Ten) handed Indiana (13-22, 6-1 Big Ten) its first Big Ten loss of the season on Friday with a 5-0 victory. Kaylan Jablonski had a spectacular game in the circle for the Huskers. The senior pitched a complete seven innings and improved to 18-7 on the year. In addition to shutting out the Hoosiers, Jablonski allowed just two hits and two walks. She also had six strikeouts. Tristen Edwards led the Huskers on offense. She went 2-for-3, with one run, one walk and one RBI. Jablonski had a double and two RBIs. Madi Unzicker also had a hit and one RBI. The Huskers and the Hoosiers will play game two of the series on Saturday, beginning at noon.

Tar Heels Sweep Doubleheader

North Carolina swept their doubleheader against Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon at Anderson Stadium. Virginia Tech struck first in both contests. Trailing in the sixth inning, Carolina infielder Sierra Parkinson drove in the game-winning run for the 2-1 victory in game one. The Tar Heels’ offense exploded in game two for the 10-2 victory in five innings. Brittany Pickett anchored Carolina’s defense, tossing two complete games with 10 strikeouts in the doubleheader. After the first day of the series, Carolina improves to 21-19 overall, 10-4 in ACC play while Virginia Tech falls to 15-22, 2-11 in the conference. North Carolina will play for the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.

Tennessee Takes Game One Against Auburn

No. 12 Tennessee earned a 2-1 victory in the series opener against No. 14 Auburn on Friday at Jane B. Moore field. The Lady Vols led 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when Auburn’s Courtney Shea tied the game with a solo home run. The Lady Vols struck first in the top of the eighth on a RBI single with two outs to lead 2-1. Auburn tried to answer once again in the home half of the inning, but after a 1-out single, the Tigers were retired on a flyout and groundout to end the game. With the win, Tennessee improved to 33-6 on the season. Tennessee reliever Matty Moss picked up the win to improve to 15-2 on the year. Tennessee and Auburn will resume play on Saturday, with game two is set to kick off at 2 p.m. CT.

LSU Defeats Ole Miss in 19 Innings

In the most innings in a game in program history, the 13th-ranked LSU softball team claimed a 2-1 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels in 19 innings, Friday night at Tiger Park. The game also tied an SEC record for most innings played in a game in the conference. With the win, LSU improves to 31-6 on the year and 6-3 in conference play, while Ole Miss falls to 18-15 overall and 3-10 in the SEC. Allie Walljasper pitched her 10th complete-game of the season and did not allow an earned run through 19 innings. She struck out nine in her 11th win on the season. The Tigers and Rebels will return to the diamond on Saturday for game two of the series. First pitch will take place at 6 p.m. CT.
