5 Things You May Have Missed in College Softball Friday

The DI College Softball teams are well into their conference play all across the country. Below are five things that stood out to us at FPN, that you may have missed from Friday’s play.

Fiser Tosses Perfect Game for Minnesota

Sophomore pitcher Amber Fiser threw her first collegiate perfect game in just 45 pitches on Friday night in Minnesota’s 9-0 five-inning victory over Purdue. With the win, the Gophers improve to 30-14, 13-3 in the Big Ten and Purdue fell to 13-37, 4-13 Big Ten. Fiser made quick work of the Purdue offense retiring all 15 Boilermakers she faced. In an hour and 22 minutes the Van Horne, Iowa native struck out six batters while recording five groundouts, three fly outs and a line out. The shortened game victory is Minnesota’s sixth in the last eight games, where they are outscoring their opponents 75-6. Minnesota and Purdue continue the series Saturday, April 28 at Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT.

Florida State Clinches ACC Atlantic Division

No. 6 Florida State (40-9, 17-2) took game one of the series with Notre Dame (30-19, 12-9 ACC) by a score of 9-2 on Friday night at Melissa Cook Stadium. With FSU’s win, along with the Boston College 4-2 loss at Louisville, the Seminoles improve to 17-2 in conference play and clinch the first-ever ACC Atlantic Division title. Florida State can secure the overall 2018 ACC regular season championship with one more conference win in its final five ACC games this season. It also marks the 31st 40-win season in FSU history and the ninth time in Lonni Alameda’s 10 years as head coach at Florida State. Florida State and Notre Dame continue their series on Saturday, April 28 with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Florida Shuts Out LSU

The fifth-ranked Florida softball team downed No. 13 LSU in the series-opening game, 7-0, Friday evening at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Gators (43-7, 16-3 SEC) recorded out nine hits with junior Amanda Lorenz leading the charge at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance. Kelly Barnhill dominated the game from in the circle and tied her season-high as she struck out 15 Tigers (36-12, 9-9 SEC) in her 18th complete-game of the season. The Gators are now 21-5 against Top 25 competition with 11 shutouts and have 20 wins against RPI Top 25 teams. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, April 28, with first pitch slated for noon.

Aggies Defeat Auburn in Game One of Series

The No. 11 Texas A&M softball team defeated No. 12 Auburn, 3-1, Friday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 2,194 in the first game at Davis Diamond. Texas A&M (38-12, 11-8) offense came alive in the fourth inning as Riley Sartain drove in the first run at the new facility with a two-out knock in the fourth. Kelbi Fortenberry added to Aggie advantage with a clutch double plating a pair of Aggies. Trinity Harrington (13-2) was dominant in the circle, holding the Tigers to four hits and striking out two. The senior recorded her tenth complete game of the season holding the Auburn offense to one sixth-inning run in her 34th career victory at Texas A&M. Auburn’s (38-12, 11-10 SEC) Kaylee Carlson suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. The Aggies and Tigers return to action for game two of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Oregon Tops Washington in Extra Innings

The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team opened up a series at No. 3 Washington with a 7-2 win in extra innings on Friday. The Ducks (39-7, 13-3 Pac-12) were 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position until DJ Sanders smashed her second grand slam of the season in the top of the ninth inning to straightaway center field. Washington had not allowed more than four runs all season before the Ducks tallied seven. Oregon also tallied a season-high five stolen bases on the night. Megan Kleist (16-5) tossed double-digit strikeouts for the ninth time this season and the third time in her last six starts. The junior allowed two runs on eight hits in nine innings with 14 strikeouts and only one walk. The Ducks and Huskies meet again on Saturday at 1 PM on ESPN2.
