OGDEN, Utah (April 7, 2014) – Southern Utah infielder Meagan Neilson was named the Big Sky Softball Player of the Week, and Sacramento State’s Caitlin Brooks was named the Big Sky Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played from March 31 – April 6.

Meagan Neilson, a senior from Harrisville, Utah, hit .500 at plate and drove in six runs as Southern Utah swept its three-game series with Portland State over the weekend. She posted a 1.125 slugging percentage against the Vikings after hitting her third home run of the year, along with a pair of doubles.

Neilson’s homer clinched an 8-0 win for the Thunderbirds in the fifth inning of the opener, and she added a pair of RBI doubles on the day for a total of six RBI. The SUU senior infielder is batting .284 for the season with 15 runs driven in and another 13 scored.

Caitlin Brooks, a junior right-hander from Escalon, Calif., returned from injury, and despite pitching for the first time since March 8, picked up a complete-game victory in her only appearance of the week. In the second game of Friday’s doubleheader at Northern Colorado, Brooks allowed just two hits and one run while striking out nine batters in six innings of work as the game was stopped after six because of the eight-run rule.

Brooks faced just four batters over the minimum, threw 101 pitches, and allowed just two hits and two walks over six innings. The nine strikeouts were one shy of her season high and she struck out the side in the sixth inning to end the game. Northern Colorado batters hit just .100 against Brooks in the game.

The reigning first team all-conference selection is now 5-4 with a 1.30 ERA this season. In nine starts, she has thrown eight complete games and opponents have combined to hit just .205 when she is in the circle.
