CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Winthrop’s McKenzi Corn (Mauldin, S.C.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week, while Radford’s Rachael Walters (Powhatan, Va.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played March 31-April 6, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Corn batted .571 (8-for-14) with a 1.071 slugging percentage, .667 OBP, eight hits, eight RBI, five runs scored, three walks, two home runs, two multi-RBI games and two multi-hit efforts in five games last week. The senior outfielder started off the week with a 3-for-4 outing against Gardner-Webb with three RBI and a run scored in a 9-1 victory. In game two vs. GWU, she hit a three-run blast to lead the Eagles to a 6-0 win. Corn added a double in the series opener vs. Campbell, before going 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and a run scored in a 14-10 win. She capped the week with two hits, two runs, one RBI, a walk and a run scored in a 7-2 victory against the Camels. The award is her first Player of the Week nod this season.
Walters went 2-1 with a 1.21 ERA, 14 strikeouts, three walks and a complete game last week against Marshall and Presbyterian. The sophomore left-hander highlighted the week with a complete game one-hitter against PC, adding five strikeouts and one walk in the 6-0 win. In her next outing, she gave up one hit in 4.1 innings of work, while striking out five and allowing one walk in an 11-0 triumph over the Blue Hose. Walters finished the week with three earned runs and nine hits allowed in 17.1 innings pitched. The honor is her first Pitcher of the Week award this season.
