Cal Poly Softball Program Signs Six to National Letters of Intent

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Already expected to return 15 letterwinners from last season’s squad, 10th-year head coach Jenny Condon fortified the Cal Poly softball team’s future roster with the recent unveiling that righthander Lindsey Chalmers (San Ramon, Calif.; California HS), shortstop Chelsea Convissar (Sunnyvale, Calif.; Homestead HS), infielder Alejandra Garcia (Sacramento, Calif.; St. Francis HS), righthander Stephanie Heyward (Sacramento, Calif.; McClatchy HS), catcher Susanne Morris (San Diego, Calif.; Scripps Ranch HS) and outfielder Amanda Sandoval (Norco, Calif.; Norco HS) have each signed National Letters of Intent with the anticipation of joining the program for the 2015 season.

“This class has passion for the game and is softball savvy,” said Condon, the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Big West Conference Coach of the Year selection. “We’re excited to have them as part of the Mustang softball family.”

The 2013 California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section Player of the Year honoree, Chalmers finished her junior season with a 15-4 mark, a 0.32 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 131 innings pitched. Also a 2013 All-East Bay League selection and all-state first team pick, Chalmers tossed back-to-back shutouts on five separate occasions this past spring.

“Lindsey has great presence and composure in the circle,” said Condon of Chalmers, a three-time scholar-athlete selection at California HS. “She has continued to improve every time we see her play. She’ll be a great compliment to the rest of our pitching staff.”

A three-time All-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League selection, Convissar hit .448 as a junior in 2013 with 26 RBI, 44 runs and seven home runs. Convissar, who has already helped Homestead HS to a combined 67-15 record and three SCVAL De Anza Division titles, batted .376 as a sophomore with 27 RBI and 29 runs. She also hit .378 as a freshman in 2011.

“We anticipate Chelsea stepping in to fill the void that will be left by our 2014 senior class,” Condon said. “She has a great game sense and is a leader on the field.”

A shortstop and catcher, Garcia earned All-Delta River League first team praise as a junior in 2013 after hitting .364 with 26 RBI and 28 runs. The St. Francis HS program’s Most Valuable Player recipient as a sophomore in 2012 after hitting .305, Garcia also batted .333 with 23 RBI during her freshman season.

“AG’s versatility will be a big asset to our program,” Condon said. “While she catches and plays shortstop, she’s versatile enough to play wherever we may need her.”

A two-time All-Delta League selection, Heyward is a career .343 hitter with a combined 1.95 ERA in the circle. Also a two-time All-Sacramento City Team selection, Heyward is a three-time honor roll recipient at McClatchy HS and cousin of Atlanta Braves right fielder Jason Heyward.

“Stephanie is an incredibly versatile athlete and we see her and Lindsey solidifying our pitching rotation for years to come,” Condon said. “If Stephanie’s not pitching, she’ll most likely be on the field at another position. Offensively, she brings speed and power to our lineup.”

As a junior last spring, Morris led Scripps Ranch HS in batting average (.393), hits (35), runs (21) and doubles (12) to earn All-Eastern League second team praise. Also the program’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Morris has helped Scripps Ranch HS to a combined 28-2 Eastern League mark during the past three years and a CIF San Diego Section tournament runner-up showing in her 2012 sophomore season.
“Susanne has a lot of experience behind the plate and manages the pitchers and field players well,” Condon said. “She’ll be a good asset for us, especially because we’re set to lose two catchers following this season.”

A three-year letterwinner at Norco HS, Sandoval has helped the Cougars to a combined 79-17 record, a 30-8 Big VIII league record and a league title in 2012.

“Amanda is a true center fielder who runs the outfield with confidence,” Condon said. “Her ability to run down balls and throw out runners will help stabilize our outfield when we graduate two seniors this year.”
