Former Player, Curran, Hired as New Rutgers Softball Assistant

By: Anthony Hernandez – Athletic Communications Assistant, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2013) – Rutgers softball hired former outfielder Lindsey Curran (Monroe, N.J.) as an assistant coach, the program has announced. Curran played for the Scarlet Knights from 2009-12 and returns to Piscataway after serving as an assistant for the Seton Hall softball staff during the 2012-13 season.

“I feel Lindsey Curran is the perfect person to fill our assistant coaching position,” said head coach Jay Nelson. “Lindsey’s high intensity and positive energy is a perfect match for this team. As a former Rutgers student-athlete she has invaluable knowledge for our newcomers on how to succeed in the classroom and on the field here at Rutgers. Lindsey was a standout centerfielder and a member of the resurgent Rutgers softball team that earned a berth in the Big East Championship Tournament in 2010.

“Lindsey knows our systems of offense and defense and has already asserted herself in teaching the details of how we play Scarlet Knights softball. She will be a great asset to the team in her work with outfielders. All in all I am glad that Lindsey has decided to come back to her alma mater and help us build a championship team.”

Most recently, Curran played under Nelson as a member of the NPF NY/ NJ Comets. Over the past year, Curran served as an assistant coach for the Pirates under first-year head coach, Paige Smith. The Pirates went 21-30 last season and advanced to the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.

“Coach Curran is a rising star in the collegiate softball profession and we are very excited that she has been given the opportunity to give back to her alma mater,” Smith said. “She will be missed at Seton Hall, but we wish her the best.”

Curran was a four-year starter for the Scarlet Knights, compiling 93 hits, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs and a .237 career batting average from 2009-2012. The former BIG EAST Academic All-Star recorded her best season as a junior in 2011, when she hit .301 with two home runs, three doubles and 11 RBIs.

The Monroe, N.J. native graduated from Rutgers in 2012 with a B.A. in criminal justice and a minor in criminology. She is the daughter of Bob and Marie Curran and the sister of Tyler, Adam and Nicholas.

“I have an enormous amount of respect and love for this university,” Curran said. “I take pride in being able to wear scarlet again and have a great feeling about coming home.”
