FPN NCAA Softball Teams to Watch: Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

The Ragin’ Cajuns (45-6) are coming off a strong regular season that has displayed some firepower. They have one 13 games straight and have won 28 of their past 29 games.

Of course, they were not seeded, another team we believe was overlooked, but they are dangerous and will give LSU all they can handle in the regional. If they get out of that, Florida State would also have their hands full.

The reasoning is simple, they have an explosive offense that can score runs in a hurry. Offensively they are lead who could be the Player of the year in DJ Sanders. Sanders is having a year with a slash line of .397/.541/1.055. add to that the national leading 28 home runs and 78 RBIs. As a team, they carry a .341 batting average with 83 home runs. Matter of fact, including Sanders, four players have double-digit home runs in Aleah Craighton (18), Haley Hayden (12) and Lexie Comeaux (10). LLU has outscored opponents 442 to 112. All of this together makes them a danger at the plate.

In the circle, they have gotten strong performances from Alex Stewart (25-3) and Alyssa Denham (15-2). Stewart holds a 1.66 ERA with 138 strikeouts over 135.1 innings. Denham has thrown 124.1 innings with 73 strikeouts and a 2.20 ERA.

LSU looked good at the SEC tournament, but are just 10-11 over the past 21 games. Although the Tigers do not have the power numbers that LLU has, they do generate runs. Carly Hoover looked to be close to normal on her velocity, but her overall health could be a concern. If this turns into a shootout, we have to think that LLU has the upper hand.

LLU is a team to be feared moving forward. They are one of our Darkhorse picks to make it to Oklahoma City.
