Urbana, Ill. – The Fighting Illini softball team, who led the Big Ten with 10 student-athletes earning NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete awards in 2013, upped the ante this past semester, posting a team grade point average of 3.50 during the Fall term. As a group, the scholarship athletes performed even stronger, averaging a semester GPA of 3.60. This mark tops the Fall of 2012, which had been one of the team’s best semesters in program history, when they averaged a 3.40.

Thirteen Illini marked down GPA’s above 3.5, including four with a perfect 4.0 term; junior Community Health – Health Education majors Brittany Sanchez and Jami Schkade, and sophomore Allie Bauch, who all earned 2013 Academic All-Big Ten and/or NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete honors, each had a flawless 4.0, while first-year outfielder Nicole Evans posted an unparalleled debut semester.

Alyssa Gunther and Jade Vecvanags both had a successful first semester at the University of Illinois as well, posting a 3.66 and 3.84, respectively. Meanwhile, both of the team’s senior leaders excelled in the classroom, as Alex Booker, a 2013 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, kept up the great work with a 3.84 last semester, and Jenna Mychko posted a 3.58.

“Our current team and the players we recruit to be a part of our program are driven, focused and committed to striving for success in all of their endeavors,” said Head Coach Terri Sullivan. “It is certainly a challenge to be a student-athlete at this world class university, and we are proud of how our team embraces that challenge.”
