LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball team split its fall home doubleheader against Ohio State on Sunday at John Cropp Stadium, posting a 3-1 victory in game one before falling 4-2 in the second game of the twin bill.

The doubleheader marked the second time this season the Wildcats had hit the field after posting an impressive win against Georgetown College last weekend at John Cropp Stadium. The Wildcats will continue fall action Oct. 4-5 in Ann Arbor, Mich., with three games against Michigan.

The Kentucky pitching staff had several strong outings Saturday against the Buckeyes, allowing only three earned runs in 14 innings of work with 15 strikeouts. Junior pitcher Kelsey Nunley paced the Wildcats with four scoreless innings to get the victory in game one, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Freshman hurler Erin Rethlake tossed the first three innings in game one, allowing just four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Shannon Smith started in the circle with three innings, allowing one hit and one earned run with four strikeouts, while fellow sophomore Meagan Prince went the final four innings with two earned runs allowed and five strikeouts.

Offensively, Kentucky was led in both games by junior outfielder Sylver Samuel, who went 2-for-5 on the day with one run scored and two stolen bases, while junior Nikki Sagermann went 1-for-3 with a double Sunday. Freshman catcher/infielder Rachael Metzger had a two-run double in game one, while fellow freshman Haley Andrus and junior Ansley Smith also posted RBI on the day. A. Smith added two runs scored and a stolen base.
