Louisville Softball Earns Two Wins over Wallace State and Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated Wallace State 10-5 and Bellarmine 12-1 to complete the first weekend the first weekend of fall play Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.

“We saw some good things from our younger players this weekend,” said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. “We were missing a few of our players from the lineup, but it was good to be able to move people around. Obviously we have a lot to work on, but we will continue to improve.”

Louisville 10 – Wallace State 5
In UofL’s first game of the day, junior Hailey Smith went 3 for 4 with two RBIs while Brittany Sims and Nicole Pufahl each had two hits as the Cards picked up a 10-5 win over Wallace State.

The Cards took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the third to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Lady Lions used an error and two hits to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

Louisville answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth. Hailey Smith’s bases-loaded two-run single scored Sydney Benz and Kelsi Jones to put the Cardinals back on top 5-4.

A bases-loaded wild pitch gave Wallace State a run to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth.

The Cardinals broke the game open, using four hits and two walks to score five runs in the fifth for the 10-5 final.

Freshman Madi Norman got the win, allowing five unearned runs on seven hits and striking out six in 7.0 innings.

Louisville 12 – Bellarmine 1
Redshirt freshman Nicole Pufahl went 3 or 3 with two runs and an RBI and sophomore Morgan Meyer was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs as the Cards belted out 15 hits in a 12-1 win over Bellarmine Sunday.

The Knights jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Ally Foster doubled and came on Marlee Tevis’s single.

The Cards used four hits and two errors o put up a seven-spot in the second. Senior Kayla Soles singled and came around to score when Brittany Sims reached on a fielder’s choice. Meyer’s two-run single plated Sims and freshman Sydney Benz who had reached on an error. Pufahl’s RBI hit made the score 4-1 and sophomore Maryssa Becker followed with a two-run single. A single by senior Kelsi Jones brought Becker home to give Louisville a 7-1 lead.

Sydney Benz’s three-run double highlighted a four-run fourth for the Cardinals. Meyer led off with a bunt single and moved to third Pufahl’s double and scored on Becker’s hit. Benz followed with bases-clearing double to right center.

Benz added her fourth RBI of the game in the sixth when she drove in freshman Hannah Tow who had led off with a single.

Becker got the win, allowing one earned run and scattering five hits and striking out four in 7.0 innings.

Marlee Tevis took the loss, allowing seven unearned runs on seven hits and striking out one in 1.2 innings. Scarlett Powers went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Knights offensively.
