CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Longwood University softball junior standout Megan Baltzell/Stafford has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office.

“Megan really embraced the opportunity to be a leader on the field this weekend,” said head coach Kathy Riley. “I feel the rest of her teammates hitting well was contagious, which relaxed everyone. We will look forward to some more exciting highlights from Megan as we start the second half of our season.”

Baltzell batted .583 (7-for-12) with a 1.417 slugging percentage, 10 RBI, seven hits, six runs scored, three home runs and three walks. The catcher highlighted her week with a 3-for-3 effort in the series finale against Presbyterian on March 30. She logged two home runs in that game, including a grand slam, totaling five RBI and four runs scored to lead the Lancers to the come-from-behind, 9-8 victory. Earlier in the day in the first game of the doubleheader, Baltzell drove in three runs on two hits. She went 1-for-2 in game one of the series at PC, as well. Against Liberty at home on March 27, Baltzell hit .500 (1-2) with two walks, two RBI and a home run.

Through 27 games so far this season, she leads the Lancers with a .456 average, 36 hits, 28 RBI, 19 walks and an .835 slugging percentage. She has a current hit streak of 10 games and has reached base safely in the last 21 games.

This week’s award marks the first of its kind for Baltzell this season and the second of her career.
