Middle Tennessee Softball Starts Fall Season Saturday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team is set to take on its challenging fall schedule this weekend and will kick off its eight game set Saturday against Ole Miss and Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn.

The game against Ole Miss will be held at the campus of Volunteer State at 2 p.m. Middle Tennessee last played the Rebels in the Red and Blue Classic on Feb. 24, a tournament that Ole Miss hosts annually. The Blue Raiders lost in a shortened five inning affair by a score of 11-0.

Following the contest with Ole Miss, MT will face tournament host Volunteer State. The Blue Raiders took on Volunteer State last season in a fall doubleheader exhibition, splitting the series.

As a junior, Jordyn Fisherback pitched in game one of the two-game set last season, throwing seven innings of four-hit ball, while striking out nine but walking away with the 2-0 loss to her name. Shelby Stinnett then a junior from Chapel Hill, Tenn., pitched a masterful game two, throwing four shutout innings for the victory.

The Blue Raiders lose eight players from the 2012-13 season, most notably the loss of third baseman Kristi Marquez, who was third on the team in batting average and fourth in RBI.

MT return eight starters from its 2013 squad, including Sun Belt Second Team selection Nina Dever and MT’s leading home run hitter Laura Dukes.

Middle Tennessee also welcomes back three-of-five pitchers from last season. Caitlin McClure made a total of 35 appearances last season and tied for a team-best three wins with Fisherback who led MT with 74 strikeouts. Stinnett returns to the rotation after pitching a second-best 90.1 innings in 2013.

The Blue Raiders also will have seven new faces in the dugout this season with six players that will look to contribute right away and Tony Foti, who is the new pitching coach.
