Pilpil, Jones-Wesley Named Softballs Weekly Best

UC Santa Barbara senior Kathryn Pilpil and Long Beach State senior Erin Jones-Wesley were named the Big West Softball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week as both players led their teams to conference series sweeps.

Pilpil Bats .600 In Series Sweep

UC Santa Barbara senior Kathryn Pilpil (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) claimed Big West Softball Field Player of the Week honors after leading the team in average, runs scored and RBI in a sweep of Cal State Northridge.

Pilpil batted .600 (6-for-10) in the series with five runs scored and three RBI.  Four of her six hits were for extra bases as she finished the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

She stroked four consecutive doubles in Saturday’s 8-7 and 8-3 doubleheader victories.  In game one, she finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Pilpil was 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in game two.

Pilpil closed out the series with two hits in three at-bats, scoring a pair of runs in Sunday’s 6-2 triumph.  The Gauchos have won five straight and have vaulted into second place in the Big West standings with a 6-3 conference record.

Jones-Wesley Breaks Record For Pitcher of the Week Awards

Long Beach State senior Erin Jones-Wesley (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) became the conference’s all-time leader for Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week awards, collecting the 15th citation of her career after earning two complete game wins against Hawai‘i.

Jones-Wesley helped the 49ers extend their winning streak to 11 straight, including a program best 9-0 start in Big West play.

She bookended the series with wins in game one and game three.  Jones-Wesley equalled her season high with 11 strikeouts and scattered four hits in a 5-3 win.

The right-hander stifled the Rainbow Wahine bats in her second appearance of the series, recording a one-hit shutout.  It was Jones-Wesley’s third shutout in Big West play.  She fanned eight UH batters and walked only three as her overall record improved to 18-4 on the season.
