PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Following an outstanding debut weekend, the Big Ten Conference honored freshman Abby Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) of the University of Michigan softball team with the inaugural Freshman of the Week award for the 2014 campaign on Monday (Feb. 10).

Ramirez played in all 26 innings of Michigan’s first four games at the USF Wilson Demarini Tournament in Tampa, Fla., and provided a spark in the number nine spot in the lineup. The freshman compiled a .583 batting average (7-for-12). She hit safely in all four games, including two multi-hit games.

Her bunt in the third inning against No. 4 Florida helped spark a four-run inning. She scored in that inning and touched home six times in all — including a run in each game. Ramirez put together a .615 on-base percentage. She stole a base against Illinois State and knocked in her first career run against Bethune-Cookman.

In the field, Ramirez was flawless at second base. She had 15 total chances, tallying 11 putouts and four assists.

Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) won the final Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor in 2013, one of her seven on the season. Sierra Lawrence (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) took home the honor once in 2013.

The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14, against Memphis and Louisiana Lafayette at the Ragin’ Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La. First pitch against Memphis is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
