Reed, Poppe Earn BIG EAST Awards

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Jackie Reed, St. John’s, Sr., IF/OF
Reed led the Red Storm to their third consecutive BIG EAST series win as St. John’s took two-of-three from regional foe Seton Hall. The senior batted .600 (6-of-10) with five runs batted in and scored three runs herself. The first baseman had 23 putouts and a hand in two double plays in three games of error-free softball. The Red Storm lead the conference in double plays with 18. In Saturday’s rubber match at Seton Hall, Reed had a pair of RBI in the fourth inning as St. John’s pulled ahead after trailing 1-0, and went on to win 5-4.

BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Kate Poppe, Villanova, So., P
Poppe boasted the top earned run average by a BIG EAST pitcher last week at 1.34, while holding opposing batters to a league-best .190 average. The sophomore pitched 15.2 innings in a three-game series at Providence, going 2-1 with a league-high 17 strikeouts. In Saturday’s rubber match, Poppe earned the win thanks to five innings of shutout work, striking out six and not allowing an extra base hit. Poppe entered the week ranked among the national leaders in strikeouts and hits allowed. After the series with the Friars, her 223 Ks leads the BIG EAST, as does her .174 opposing batting average, while her 1.89 ERA lands third.

Weekly Honor Roll
Callie Dennison, Butler, Sr., IF/P
Dennison pitched to a 1.68 ERA in three appearances at Georgetown last weekend. The senior did not allow an extra base hit and went 2-0, including a shutout performance in the series finale on Saturday.

Liz Dike, Creighton, Jr., IF
Dike batted .455 (5-of-11) against the top pitching team in the league in DePaul, recording three RBI and a pair of homers.

Mary Connolly, DePaul, Jr., P/1B
Connolly picked up a win and a save at Creighton, pitching to a 1.56 ERA while striking out 12 in 9.0 innings of work. At the plate, she also added three RBI and scored four runs as DePaul remained undefeated (10-0) in BIGE AST play and extended its winning streak to 15 games.

Megan Coronado, DePaul, Sr., OF/1B
Coronado batted .417 (5-of-12) with five RBI and three extra base hits, including a triple, in a three-game series at Creighton and a midweek win at Illinois. The Blue Demons lead all BIG EAST squads with 10 triples this season, including three by Coronado.

Leichty led the offensive effort for Butler with a .667 batting average (4-of-6) with five RBI and a pair of
