Super Regionals Day One Take Aways

Oklahoma State at Florida State

What a way to kick off the 2019 Super Regional round, wow! An extra inning affair that ended in the Cowgirls taking game one was better than promised.

Oklahoma State’s, Samantha Show, and FSU’s, Meghan King, dazzled. Show went the nine inning distance sprinkling five hits, issuing only one walk, one earned run, and striking out five. King went eight inning, struck out 10 Cowgirls, allowed five hits, and was eventually lifted for Kathryn Sandercock after the Cowgirls pushed two runs across the plate.

The Cowgirls were impressive, especially after trailing 1-0 early and not putting up a run themselves until the sixth inning. There was a calmness and focus that aided them well and kept them in this game. Florida State appeared almost tense? So that will be interesting to keep an eye on through the rest of the Tallahassee Super Regional.

Expect to see Show versus King the entire series as those arms are their team’s bread and butter. Whoever can make the necessary adjustments, and stay the calmest, wins this series. Personally, I hope it goes all three games as this is one of the best Super Regional round matchups.

Texas at Alabama

Texas looked over-matched in Tuscaloosa last night and, make no mistake, the Rhodes House is arguably the toughest place to play in the country. It isn’t an easy environment for any program to go into and come out with victories.

Alabama’s Montana Fouts again showed why she is one of the best arms in the country holding a powerful Texas offense to only three hits en route to the shutout. Longhorn ace, Miranda Elish, performed well enough but made a few key mistakes that need to be cleaned up quickly for Texas to have a shot at defeating the Tide. Uncharacteristic errors also provide devastating for the Longhorns.

Despite not playing all that well and looking somewhat over-matched, the Longhorns still only lost 3-0 and that is something they should use to build on going into tonight’s elimination contests. Texas isn’t out of this yet, but they’re going to have to solve the puzzle that is “Montana Fouts”.
