Reaching a couple of personal milestones, Cal State Fullerton sophomore Missy Taukeiaho and Cal State Northridge junior Brianna Elder familiarized themselves once again with the Big West Softball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week awards.

Taukeiaho Leads Titans To Series Victory

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Missy Taukeiaho (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) collected her third Big West Softball Field Player of the Week award, playing a vital role in her team’s series victory against first-place Long Beach State.

The three Player of the Week citations tie Taukeiaho for third all-time in Big West history.  Former Titan Jenny Topping earned the award four times in 2001, and was a record five-time honoree in 2003.

Taukeiaho wore out Long Beach State pitching to the tune of .600 (6-for-10) batting with two doubles and a home run.  With four runs scored and four RBI, Taukeiaho accounted for nearly half of the Titans’ 17 total runs in the series.  The Titans won a conference series against the 49ers for the first time since the 2008 season.

The third baseman raked her league-leading 14th home run of the year in Wednesday’s 8-0, five-inning victory over the 49ers.  She finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI.  The two-run shot moved Taukeiaho into a tie for the No. 3 spot on the CSF single-season list while placing her in a tie for No. 6 on the Big West chart.

Taukeiaho provided a hit and two walks in the 3-1, game two victory.  She recorded her second multi-hit game of the series, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the 8-6 loss in the series finale.  Taukeiaho added her seventh stolen base of the season in defeat.

For the week, Taukeiaho displayed a .667 on-base percentage and 1.100 slugging percentage to help the Titans position into a tie for third place in the competitive Big West.

Others nominated: Jillian Andersen (Cal Poly); Taylor Glover (Cal State Northridge); Kelly Zboralske (UC Davis); Stacy Cavazos (UC Santa Barbara); Leisha Li’ili’i

Elder Becomes First Matador 20-Game Winner Since 2001

For the third time this season, Cal State Northridge junior Brianna Elder (Concord, Calif./Concord HS) earned Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week recognition, becoming the program’s first 20-game winner in 13 years.

Elder posted a 2-0 record with a 0.52 ERA to help the Matadors sweep UC Riverside in Big West action.  She allowed just one earned run in 13.1 innings pitched, walking three and striking out 10 as CSUN improved to 29-19 overall and inched closer to the program’s first 30-win campaign since 2010.

Elder, who is now 20-8 on the season, is CSUN’s first 20-game winner since Sarah Farnworth went 25-16 in 2001.

The right-hander recorded her 17th complete game and fourth shutout of the season in an 8-0 win in game one of the series.  She scattered five hits against the Highlander bats and allowed zero free passes while fanning five.  Elder returned to the circle for Sunday’s 9-3 victory, and yielded three runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings pitched with three walks and five strikeouts.

Elder lowered her ERA to 1.88, the second-lowest mark in the conference, and increased her season total to 117 strikeouts.  That represents the most K’s by a Matador hurler since 2008.

Others nominated: Chloe Wurst (Cal Poly); Christina Washington (Cal State Fullerton); Dana Cruse (UC Davis); Shelby Wisdom (UC Santa Barbara)
