PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2014) – Rutgers softball senior right fielder Loren Wlliams (Los Angeles, Calif.) took home the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Award after going 13-for-19 (.684) in the Scarlet Knights’ opening weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
Williams, the team’s leading returning hitter from last season, recorded five straight multi-hit games to start the season, capped by her 4-for-4 performance in a 10-6 win against Colorado State in the team’s final game at the UTSA Roadrunner Classic.
The Crenshaw HS (Calif.) product went 2-for-4 against Colorado State (Feb. 14) in the team’s season-opener before posting a 3-for-4 performance in the 9-1 victory over Wichita State (Feb. 14). Williams knocked in three runs in the victory, leading off the third inning with a solo home run and also recording a double.
The right fielder went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, in RU’s following two contests against Oklahoma State (Feb. 15) and UTSA (Feb. 15) before going off for four hits to close the tournament. She also recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the five games.
The Scarlet Knights are next in action this weekend at the 2014 NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. RU opens the tournament on Friday, Feb. 21 at noon against James Madison at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
