The awards seem to be endless for Michigan junior short stop Sierra Romero. As a freshman she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year as well as Big Ten Player of the Year an award she also won last season as a sophomore. She was a NFCA All-America first team selection as a sophomore and was a Top-3 Finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Those are just some of the awards Romero has earned. The Murrieta, CA native is currently hitting. .522 with 13 home runs and 40 RBI. Her slugging percentage is also impressive sitting at 1.145. She has played a major role in her teams success so far this season and will look to help lead them to the WCWS.

Let get to know her a little better.

FPN: At what age did you decide that you wanted to become an elite/college softball player, why?

Romero: I don’t remember the exact age, but it was around the time I started playing travel ball. I was hooked on watching all the games on TV and I wanted that to be me one day. Also I knew if I worked hard enough I could have my college education paid for and that became my goal, to have my schooling paid for so my parents didn’t have to worry about it.

FPN: When did you hit your first home run? How did it make you feel?

Romero: My first home run I believe was my freshmen year of high school. I remember being shocked because I wasn’t known for being a power hitter. I was a bunter and just did what I could to get on base.

FPN: Who or what inspired you the most to pursue your dream?

Romero: Both of my parents supported me and pushed me to want to be the best. They paid for every flight, hitting lesson, fielding lesson and all the things that came along the way. Knowing how much they invested in me to do what I love motivated me more to become better and strive to be the best.

FPN: Some advice to people who want to follow your path; what are three things you should do to help yourself improve as a player?

Romero: Always strive to be better, there is always someone out there working hard to be better than you. Figure out what you want and stop at nothing until you get it. With that mentality I truly believe you can do whatever you want. But most importantly have fun, enjoy what you do and have a good time along the way. Enjoy the process.

FPN: What is the first thing you look forward to in the off-season, why?

Romero: Sleep!! During season you miss out on a lot of sleep and in the off-season I look forward to resting my body and spending time with my friends and family.

FPN: What difficulties did you encounter transitioning from high school to college? (– softball or just college wise)

Romero: Both are completely different; college is much harder academically and that was something that I struggled to balance. Time management was key to succeed in college and it took me a whole year to really adjust and figure it out.

FPN: Are you the type of player who likes to write things on your glove? If so, what do you write?

Romero: I don’t write anything on my infield glove but I do write “Breathe” on my batting gloves. Sometimes I get frustrated or overly anxious when I’m hitting and I have to step out of the box and relax and remember to take a deep breath and just do what I know how to do.

FPN: After a game, what is your favorite thing to eat, why?

Romero: I can always go for some Panera or Mexican food. I’m not very picky at all.

FPN: What is your favorite thing about your coach, why?

Romero: The way she motivates me to do better and be better on-and-off the field. She has really taught me a lot since I’ve been at Michigan and there is nobody else I would rather play for than Coach Hutch.

FPN: On your team who do you think has the best dance moves, why?

Romero: I would have to say Lauren Sweet, she can make a beat out of anything and she’s my favorite person to have dance parties with in the locker room and during warm ups.

FPN: In your mind what is a breakfast for champions, why?

Romero: I’m not much of a breakfast person but Hutch was really on me about it, so now I stick with breakfast sandwiches, orange juice and a banana.

FPN: What genre of music gets you most ready to play a game, why?

Romero: Rap and Hip Hop are all I listen to on game days. Helps me get pumped up!

Extra Innings

FPN: What is your favorite drill to do in practice/warm-ups?

Romero: Front toss on the field from Hutch because you just absolutely crush the ball and it makes you feel amazing about your swing watching the ball fly over the fence.
