Ohio Lady Lasers Blue 16U: Team Profile

One of the top organizations in the east coast is the Ohio Lady Lasers that was started by Jeff Cavanaugh in 1993. Over the last twenty-four years, the Laser program has produced players going to SEC, ACC and Big Ten conferences. This Ohio-based program is doing the right things to get players to cross over the state lines to play for their teams.

The Lady Lasers Blue was a tough out last year and after their highly competitive tournament schedule at these events Diamond 9 in Florida, Colorado Sparkler, and Atlanta Legacy. At the season end, the team posted a 65-28-1 record. Head Coach Tony Gunter will have his team focused and fundamentally ready to compete at these events this summer: Scenic City Summer Showcase, St. Louis Recruit Revolution by Boombah Showcase, Atlanta Legacy, and ASA/USA Nationals.

Here is an inside look at the team’s roster by coach Tony Gunter:

C – Macey Moore (2019, Toledo)
Macey will continue to lead the team as our starting catcher. Macey has been with our program since the beginning at 10u and has always been our unofficial captain leading the team in program prayer/pep talk. As a catcher, she has a cannon-like arm and brings speed and power to our offense. Last year she was second in home runs with 5.

P – Morgan Bowers (2019, Kent State)
Morgan will continue to help carry the pitching load along with Olivia this summer. This fall she led our pitching staff striking out 50 batters over 43.67 innings of work. This included an incredible performance tossing a 1 hit shutout against the Michigan Batbusters at the Demarini Fall Brawl in Columbus. This fall she also led the team with her bat stroking three Home Runs.

CF – Abby Davis (2018, Lipscomb University)
Abby will continue to bat lead-off and start in Center Field for us. In 2016 she led the team in hitting with a .536 average and stolen bases with 43. She tied Kara for the lead in runs scored last year with 71.

SS – Shayla Munyan (2018, Uncommitted)
Shay typically bats 3rd and looks like another lefty slapper. She rarely slaps however she hits for power and has speed. She is our starting shortstop and is very smooth in this position with a strong arm. In 2016 Shay batted .445 and led the team in triples with 12 and was second in doubles with 17. She also stole 24 bases and led the team in getting hit by pitches with 11.

2B – Kara Gunter (2020, Uncommitted)
Kara bats 2nd and although she looks like another fast lefty slapper (she is fast) she hits for average and power and for the fall season leading the team in triples 4, RBIs 26, total bases 60, and slugging percentage .741, second in batting average .469, runs scored 27, and home runs 2 and is third in stolen bases 9. She is a difference maker defensively.

1B – Jillian Jakse (2020, Uncommitted)
Defensively, Jillian is the best 2020 first baseman in the state of Ohio. Her glove is like a vacuum and she is a big target with phenomenal athleticism.
Jillian has been in our program since the age of 12 and has consistently been one of our top hitters for both power and average. In 2016 she batted .426 and let the team in Home Runs with 7, Doubles with 29, and RBIs with 83. We plan for her to continue batting clean-up this summer.

OF/UTL – Emily Walker (2020, Uncommitted)
In only her second year in our program, Emily is more and more getting to be one of the player’s college coaches ask about.
Defensively, her speed and aggressiveness to the ball make her perfect for our outfield. But athletically she can just as well play shortstop or catcher, or anywhere but pitcher.
Offensively, she batted .439 third on the team this fall and was second in stolen bases with 18.

OF/C – Jaymee Sommer (2019, Uncommitted)
Jaymee has been with us since she was 12 and is a very tough, very fast outfielder/catcher. She typically is one of our top hitters for average batting .429 in 2016 and was third in stolen bases with 35.

P – Olivia Rettke (2019, Uncommitted)
Olivia is in her second year with our program and someone we see sharing the bulk of our pitching load this summer along with committed 2019 pitcher Morgan Bowers. One of the hardest working players on our team both in the gym and the classroom she is a big, strong kid with excellent speed, movement, off-speed, and most importantly, command of her pitches.

UTL – Emma Valley (2019, Uncommitted)
Emma is in her second year in our program. She shares time at third base but can and has played every position on the field for us except pitcher or catcher. Emma is strong and fast and a very aggressive fielder.

IF – Rachel Jensen (2018, Uncommitted)
Rachel is in her first year with our team and we liked her at tryouts as a kid who could strengthen us on the left side of the infield while providing a powerful bat in our line-up. Last year she hit 10 home runs on Varsity at Pickerington North as a freshman. She broke her left ankle last fall in the middle of our fall season and is just getting back to working out from rehab. We look for her to do great things this spring and summer.

UTL – Becca Crawford (2019, Uncommitted)
Becca just joined our team this winter after we had another player leave us to pursue other non-softball related interests.
