Conroe, TX (August 9, 2016) – The Dawgs started game one of a three-game series against the Pennsylvania Rebellion tonight.
The Dawgs started off hot scoring six runs on six hits in the first inning against the Rebellion. Leadoff hitter Kiki Stokes singled with a line drive in the 5-6 hole. Britt Vonk reached first base safely when a hit to third baseman Cheyenne Cordes did not result in a play. Nerissa Myers delivered an RBI single to score the first run of the game when K. Stokes crossed home plate (1-0). Another RBI single from Jade Rhodes put two runs on the board (2-0).
After four balls to Amanda Fama, Meagan May Whitley smashed one to the right field fence, just short of going over, bringing in two more runs to extend the Dawgs lead (4-0).
A pitching change was made for the Rebellion as starter Haylie Wagner was replaced by Emma Johnson with one out in the bottom of the first. Emilee Koerner crushed one right back up the middle, just missing May Whitley as she took off from second base, but scored Fama, who was at third (5-0). K. Stokes made her second appearance at the plate in the first inning, this time poking an RBI single into right field (6-0).
In the top of the third, the Dawgs ended the side 1-2-3, starting with a groundout to Madison Shipman at short. After back-to-back hits from Olivia Watkins and Kayla Winkfield and with Stacey Porter at the plate, May Whitley picked off Winkfield with a bullet to first base for out number two. A dribbler to Myers at second would bring the Dawgs in to hit.
Vonk joined in on the hit fest for the Dawgs in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to left field to bring pinch runner Taylore Fuller home (7-0). Another pitching change for the Rebellion gave Johnson relief when Miranda Kramer entered the circle. The Rebellion was able to get out of the inning, giving up just one run with a double play on a fly ball to left fielder Brittany Gomez, as she threw home to get Koerner tagging up from third.
The Dawgs continued to shut down the Rebellion offense on the arm of Michigan native Sara Driesenga, leaving them scoreless through six innings and ending the inning with a strikeout to Chaley Brickey, her third of the night.
The fourth pitcher for the Rebellion, Hayley Flynn, entered the circle in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Lee Ann Spivey entered the box for Vonk, and delivered a long shot to center field that was just caught by Gomez.
With nine hits on the night, the Dawgs take game one against the Rebellion (7-0). Nerissa Myers was 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI, along with Meagan May Whitley, who was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Driesenga earned the win with four strikeouts in the circle.
