LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Five East Carolina softball players were honored as scholar athletes for the 2012-13 academic year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Collectively the Pirates were also recognized as an NFCA Division I All-Academic team.
Shortstop Casey Alcorn, pitcher Sarah Christian, outfielder Jill Jelnick, infielder Cicely Lopez and catcher Abby Wynne each received individual scholar-athlete certificates for their performance in the classroom, while the team combined for a 3.17 cumulative grade point average (GPA) for the year.
To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must have obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year.
Jelnick, who received the honor for the third straight season, was also named to Conference USA’s Softball All-Academic Team for the 2013 season, in addition to being listed to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team. The Alison Viejo, Calif., native has received the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal (3.75+ GPA) and a place on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0+ GPA) three times. In every semester at East Carolina, she has earned the school’s Chancellor’s List (4.0 GPA) designation.
Christian was also tabbed to the C-USA’s Softball Academic Team in 2013, while also earning a place on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll in each of her first two years on campus.
