Last week, Fastpitch News decided to go with Auburn and LSU for the first Series of the Week. It did not disappoint.

Game 1

Friday night’s contest was back-and-forth with LSU taking the early lead in the first inning from a two-run homer from Sahvanna Jaquish.

Both teams produced five hits but it was Auburn that prevailed in the end. Kendall Veach roped a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four. Morgan Podany gave Auburn the lead it needed to hang on when Constance Quinn bobbled a chopper at second base.

Game 2

Due to inclement weather, Saturday’s game was pushed to Sunday afternoon with a noon start time. It was all LSU. Carley Hoover pitched a three-hit shutout and Jaquish set the program’s career RBI record in an 8-0 run-rule victory.

Jaquish passed Bianka Bell’s 236 mark with one swing in the top of the sixth. The three-run bomb was her only hit of the game and was her fourth home run of the season.

Game 3

Sunday’s nightcap ended the only way imaginable, an error. Auburn had three errors in the game while LSU’s only one came at a costly time. Shemiah Sanchez’ throw went wild allowing Kasey Cooper to score from second and gave Auburn the walk-off win, 5-4.

Players of the series:

Kaylee Carlson was 2-0 over the weekend. In 14 innings she surrendered 14 hits, eight runs, six earned runs, five walks and struck out nine. The win Sunday night improved her record to 13-0 with a 1.00 ERA. Her 146 pitches in the third game set a new career-high for pitches in a single game.

Bailey Landry was 6-10 at the plate for LSU with a triple, two doubles and one RBI.

Haley Fagan was 3-7 with two doubles, three RBI and four walks. Kendall Veach was 3-11 with a double and four RBI.

Quotables:

LSU Head Coach Beth Torina on splitting the two games on Sunday…

“I think we let the details get away from us in the last game. Some small things, but obviously we have a better focus of what we need to do when we get back to campus. But ultimately, we showed we’re capable of big things. Luckily for us, we’re not playing for the conference championship this weekend. Of course, we want to win the SEC Championship, but we showed that we can fight, hit and do everything it takes to be one of the best in the league.”

Auburn Head Coach Clint Myers on coming back after the loss…

“If you want to dwell on it then you are going to come and not be as successful as you can. You saw the fight we had, we scored two in the first. We talked about what we need to do a little bit in the locker room…. they listened and they responded well.”
