RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston freshman pitcher Samantha Martin was named the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week after helping the Cougars to a series win over Delaware in their inaugural weekend in CAA action, as announced Tuesday by league offices.

The freshman hurler made two appearances on the weekend and factored in both of CofC’s wins of the Blue Hens, totaling 7.2 innings of work without allowing a run. The Tallahassee, Fla., native started Saturday’s second game and threw a complete game in the 7-0 victory. Martin then earned her first career save on Sunday after entering the game with the tying run on first base in the seventh, and she didn’t allow the runner to advance and sealed the last two outs for the Cougars.

The rookie pitcher finished the week with a perfect ERA, in addition to fanning 10 batters and walking just one. She gave up just five hits, all singles.

Martin becomes the third Cougar to earn Player of the Week honors, following Valerie Cassell (named Pitcher of the Week March 4) and Lizzy Vaughn (named Player of the Week on March 11).

Martin and the rest of the Cougars return to action when they cross town on Wednesday, March 26 to face off with intra-city rival Charleston Southern.
