The Cannonball Softball Training Tool

Cannonball Softball

The weighted Cannonball softball is a pitcher’s best friend. This one-pound ball does wonders for developing a pitcher’s wrist and forearm strength, increases spin, and speeds up muscle memory when used to develop new pitches.

The number one rule when using any weighted ball one pound or heavier, is to never lift it above your shoulder. This means when using the cannonball, pitchers shouldn’t go beyond the T-Drill. There are plenty of other weighted softballs out there less than a pound that can be thrown from a K, arm circle, and even a full pitch. Let’s not risk shoulder or elbow injury by being careless with a one-pound ball. A 12” softball weighs approximately between six and seven ounces. You’ll notice right away that the cannon ball is much heavier. Be smart.

The Cannonball is a great tool for pitchers to use when learning new pitches. Since the ball is heavier than a softball, pitchers will catch on and develop muscle memory faster than if they were to use a regular ball. Make sure the pitcher has the correct instruction on how to spin the pitch, it would be a shame to jump right into cannon ball use, only to later find out the pitcher developed muscle memory incorrectly. Focus on quality over quantity. Every rep counts.

Are you wondering which pitches the use of the Cannonball will benefit? It can be used for any pitch that requires spin and muscle memory development. Fastballs, back flip change-ups, drop balls, screw balls, curve, and even rise balls. The ball is rubber and will bounce off any surface it is used on, so practicing drop ball spins with the cannon ball versus a real ball will not only benefit the pitcher but it will make the life of the catcher a lot easier.

NOTE: After completing spins with the cannon ball, be sure to do a few with the regular ball before going back and throwing your full pitch. You’ll notice right away how much lighter the softball will feel in your hand. It will also feel lighter to the catcher. To prevent launching your first pitch or endangering your catcher after cannonball drills, take time to spin the real ball.
