Western Kentucky Softball

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU softball head coach Amy Tudor announced Thursday afternoon the hiring of Jon Sanders as an assistant coach for the 2016-17 season.

Sanders comes to The Hill with an accomplished coaching record, having served assistant and head coaching tenures on the collegiate, high school and club levels where he has amassed a career head coaching record of 210-105.

“I am extremely excited to announce the addition of Jon Sanders to my staff,” Tudor said. “Jon’s coaching experience and success at several different levels will provide a great asset to the program and I look forward to working with him as his expertise and knowledge will further enhance WKU softball.”

Most recently, Sanders served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, for the 2015-16 season where he helped develop two NFCA All-Region players, three MAC All-Conference honorees and one MAC All-Freshman selection. During his time with the Cardinals, the team produced a .310 batting average and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on the year.

Sanders comes to Bowling Green with collegiate coaching experience in the state of Kentucky, having made a pair of coaching stints in the Bluegrass State prior to his time in Muncie.

In 2013, Sanders served as an assistant coach at Division III member Transylvania State University in Lexington where he helped develop All-American third baseman Megan Mitchell.

Prior to his time in Lexington, Sanders served as head coach for Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, for the 2012 season where he helped Mary Ann Warford become just the second National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) All-American in program history. Warford was also named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) Player of the Year and was one of five Eagles to earn All-Conference accolades.

Sanders led his Ansbury athletes to success off the field as well as his players garnered a total of four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Athlete honors. Warford would become the first player in program history to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America College Division Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Before heading to the collegiate ranks, Sanders produced a highly successful coaching career at both the high school and club levels in Central Indiana.

In 2009 and 2010, Sanders led Hamilton Heights High School to consecutive Mid-Indiana Conference titles while garnering MIC Coach of the Year accolades in 2009. Prior to his stint with Hamilton Heights, Sanders led Daleville High School from 2005-08 where his teams captured a pair of Mid-Eastern Conference titles.

His final stop at the high school level came in 2011 when he served as the head coach of Bloomington North High School. Overall, he amassed a record of 186-57 (.765) in six years as a high school head coach and captured a sectional title in 2008.

Sanders also found success on the travel ball circuit as he started the Indiana Huskies club program in 2007 and led it to consecutive state runner-up finishes in both 2008 and 2009. The program highlight came in 2009 when the Huskies made an appearance in the national tournament.

A native of Muncie, Indiana, Sanders graduated from Anderson University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in history education.
