Lamar names softball captains

BEAUMONT, Texas – Candyce Carter, Casey Cromwell and Julianne Viator have been named as captains of the Lamar University softball team for the 2014 season Lamar coach Holly Bruder announced today.

Carter and Cromwell are serving as captains for the second straight season. The captains were selected in a team vote.

“We, as a staff, could not be happier with these three girls elected to be at the forefront of Lamar softball,” Bruder said. “We have no doubt they will be model citizens off the field and great athletes on the field.”

Carter, a senior center fielder, batted .339 last season with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs.

“Candyce was a good leader last year and we expect her to be even stronger this year,” Bruder said. “We have high expectations for Candyce as a senior captain.”

Cromwell, a junior second baseman, hit .243 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. She was second on the Cardinals with 92 assists last year.

“Casey’s consistency as a role model is evident to our staff, and must have also been to her teammates,” Bruder said. “She is a great leader by example and one that is always putting it all out there.”

Viator, a senior right fielder, batted .227 with 18 RBIs in 2013.

“Julianne came back this year as a senior with something to prove. She has elevated her playing ability and leadership qualities tremendously,” Bruder said. “”I am so glad her teammates saw this improvement and wanted her to lead them.”

Lamar, which fielded its first team since 1987 last season, went 24-35 overall and finished fifth in the Southland Conference with a 14-13 record.

The Cardinals host their annual Red-White fall scrimmage at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ford Park. Admission is free.
