POCATELLO, Idaho (May 8, 2014) – In game two of the 2014 Big Sky Softball Championship, No. 3 Southern Utah defeated No. 2 Sacramento State, 5-2.
In the top of the third inning, Southern Utah hit back-to-back home runs. SUU’s Kadi Henderson hit a two-run home run and Madison Resley hit a solo homerun. Henderson’s home run knocked in Kelli Hales, who was on base after hitting a single and stealing second.
In the top of the fourth, Sacramento State got out of a bases loaded jam, catching a would-be grand slam, at the warning track to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sacramento State’s Sasha Margulies flied out to left field, scoring Kortney Solis and cutting SUU’s lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth the Hornets scored another run. Nicole Clark hit an RBI single, knocking in Yesenia Alcala who was on base after a double to left field.
On a full count in the top of the seventh, SUU’s Lyndsey Healey hit a two-run double to center field, plating Taylor Dumas and Kylee Wolf. Wolf was walked and stole second, while Dumas pinch ran for Resley, who hit a single.
Southern Utah’s Ariel Hart was the winning pitcher after she threw 4.1 innings with four hits, two runs and four strikeouts. Katie Greenberg earned the save after pitching the final 2.2 innings.
Sacramento State’s Caitlin Brooks was the losing pitcher after throwing four innings with six hits, three runs and three strikeouts.
No. 3 Southern Utah advances to play No. 1 Idaho State in game three on Friday, May 9th, at 10 a.m.
No. 2 Sacramento State will face No. 4 Northern Colorado in game four on Friday at 1 p.m.
