Spartanburg, S.C. – After picking up two wins in the three-game sweep of Lipscomb, USC Upstate freshman Lexi Shubert has been named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week for softball.
Shubert earned the honor after leading Upstate to a series sweep of Lipscomb and maintaining the Spartans’ hold on first place in the A-Sun standings. The selection is the first weekly honor of her career at Upstate and she becomes the third Spartan to win pitcher of the week honors from the A-Sun this year, following Hannah Alexander’s selection on Feb. 10 and Anna Miller’s two selections on Feb. 24 and March 17.
“I am thrilled Lexi earned pitcher of the week from the A-Sun,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “We were able to sweep a very good Lipscomb team over the weekend and Lexi played a huge role in accomplishing that. For her to step in and perform as well as she did as a freshman in one of the biggest series of the year for us says a lot about her. It is great to now have all three of our pitchers earn pitcher of the week from the A-Sun this season.”
Shubert went 2-0 with two complete games in two starts last week, both coming against Lipscomb. She got the start in the first game of the series with a four-hit shutout in Upstate’s 4-0 victory over the Lady Bisons Saturday evening. She struck out six along the way. She also got the start in the final game of the series on Sunday. After allowing a game-opening solo home run, she held Lipscomb to four hits the rest of the way and struck out four to improve to 14-1 on the year.
Shubert currently tops Upstate and is tied for the A-Sun lead with 14 wins and 107 innings pitched. She is second in the league with a 0.85 ERA, .173 opponent batting average and third with 108 strikeouts.
Upstate heads to Western Carolina Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader before hitting the road in A-Sun play to take on Mercer in Macon, Ga., Saturday and Sunday.
