EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE softball team completed its fall exhibition season in style Sunday afternoon, winning a pair of games at SIU Carbondale.

The Cougars defeated the Salukis 6-4 in 11 innings before earning an 11-3 victory over Kaskaskia College later on at Charlotte West Stadium.

“We displayed a lot of toughness and resiliency,” Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said. “I’m very happy with the way we battled. ”

Against the Salukis, SIUE starting pitcher Haley Chambers completed her impressive fall by allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters over 10 innings of work.

The game was scoreless at the end of seven innings, and the two in-state rivals matched each other with a run apiece in each of the first three extra frames.

But the Cougars came up with three runs in the top of the 11th to build a lead that the hosts wouldn’t be able to overcome. Chambers got things going with an RBI single that scored Alex McDavid before Emily Hastings produced a two-run single in the next at-bat to seal the victory.

“We had solid hitting all the way through the lineup,” Montgomery said. “We hit the ball well, and came up with some clutch hits when we needed them.”

In the day’s second game against Kaskaskia, the Cougars scored five runs in the third inning and never looked back. McDavid paced the SIUE offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s and three runs scored.

In the circle, freshman starter Alexis Kohrs threw a complete game, recording an impressive 16 strikeouts and only surrendering four hits.

The Cougars complete their fall season with a 7-1 record, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 57-11 over the eight games played.

SIUE begins its 2014 regular season in February, and the Cougars’ head coach was pleased with the team’s progress over the course of the fall schedule.

“We made a lot of progress this fall and we continued to improve,” Montgomery added. “Having seven new players in the program, I’m happy with how we came together as a team. There’s a lot of room to improve, but the players learned how to play together at a very high level.”
