CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC defeated East Carolina 6-1 Wednesday night as Lori Spingola pitched a one-hitter, and Kati Causey belted a two-run homer to lead the Tar Heels.

“I thought we did a really great job today,” head coach Donna J. Papa said. “Lori Spingola was outstanding and had one of her best outings on the mound, and Kati Causey and Erin Satterfield each had key hits for us. We were very poised, very solid today.”

In the second, Kati Causey drew a walk and advanced to second as Kendra Lynch reached on an error. After Elena Covert came in to run for Causey, she advanced to third when Darby Rosen was hit by a pitch and then scored as Erin Satterfield hit an RBI single up the middle.

After two quiet innings on both sides, the Pirates posted their only run, a solo shot by Alex Fieldhouse down the left field line.

Carolina answered and took back the lead with a five-run outing in the bottom half of the inning. Satterfield singled again, advancing to second on a bunt single by Aquilla Mateen before heading to third when Amy Nece singled through the left side. Kristen Brown then hit a sac fly to right to score Satterfield for what would be the game winning run. An unsuccessful pick-off attempt by the Pirates advanced Nece while Mateen scored, and then Nece came home as Amber Parrish reached on another ECU error. Kati Causey followed with a two-run blast to center to give the Tar Heels their 6-1 victory.

Spingola (12-7) struck out seven while pitching the complete game for Carolina, now 17-12 (9-2 ACC) for the year.

Up Next: Carolina heads to Elon on Thursday for a 5:30 game. The Tar Heels host No. 9 Florida State next weekend, playing a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. on ESPN3, and game three will be Monday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. Sunday is UNC softball’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day.
