Upstate’s Griffin, Lipscomb’s Young Take Home A-Sun Weekly Awards

MACON, Ga. – USC Upstate’s Cheyenne Griffin and Lipscomb’s Kelly Young collected this week’s Atlantic Sun Softball weekly honors for their performances over the weekend, announced by the league office on Monday.

Griffin was the co-MVP of the Upstate Classic after leading the Spartans to a 3-0 weekend. She hit a home run in every game and finished the weekend with eight RBI. She went 7-13 for a .537 batting average for the weekend, while slugging 1.231. In Friday’s second game against George Mason, the senior went 4-6 and scored three runs as the Spartans staged a dramatic comeback to win 21-20 in extra innings. In the final two games of the Upstate Classic, Griffin was a combined 6-9 on her way to co-MVP honors.

Young pitched in all four games for the Lady Bisons at the 2015 Mardi Gras Invitational. She recorded 17 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched for the weekend and finished with a 1-1 record. She went seven innings and did not allow an earned run against Butler in the opening game of the tournament. Young later on pitched six innings against No. 24-ranked South Alabama and struck out two, while only giving up four hits in a loss. Young is currently tied for the conference lead in strikeouts with 28 after the opening two weeks of the season.
