EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP softball team wrapped up its home fall schedule by splitting with Midland College on Friday afternoon at Helen of Troy Softball Complex. The Miners pounded the Chaparrals, 15-5, in game one and lost game two, 5-4, in eight innings.
Game one
The Miners used a seven-run fifth inning to blow the game open as senior Kayla Black blasted a grand slam and sophomore KawehiokalaniNetane’s ground rule double brought senior Miraya Montiel across home plate.
Junior Ashley Eldridge continued to play well this fall as she went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a single and four RBI, including one in the seventh inning.
Game two
Midland College scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to down the Miners. UTEP received RBIs from Eldridge, senior Colleen Hohman and Montiel to take an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Midland’s Taylor Daniels knocked in a run and Kelcey Gomez belted a three-run shot to centerfield to tie the game in the third inning.
The Miners will complete their fall schedule when they take on Eastern Arizona on Saturday in Thatcher, Ariz.
