Tennessee takes Game 3, Florida clinches SEC

In front of a record-setting crowd of 2,239 on Sunday afternoon, the Tennessee Volunteers avoided a sweep and knocked off the No. 1 Florida Gators.

Sunday’s victory was the first over a top-ranked opponent since 2015 and it also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Gators.

Megan Geer’s grand slam in the bottom of the fifth provided the first runs of the series for the Vols and the first run allowed by Florida in 47 consecutive innings during conference play. The five runs scored against was the second-most for Florida this season.

CJ McClain was 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. True freshman pitch Caylan Arnold got the win. She entered the game in the second innings and struck out five and allowed one hit in five innings of work. It was her eighth victory against ranked opponents this season.

Game 2

Delanie Gourley held the Volunteers to three hits in a complete-game shutout Saturday afternoon and the Florida Gators clinched the Southern Conference regular season championship with a 9-0 win.

The Gators unleashed for 12 hits with Justine McLean and Amanda Lorenz combining for seven of them. Lorenz had a career-high four-hit game.

Aleshia Ocasio tripled off the right-field wall in the first inning to give the Gators a 2-0 lead and the Gators went on to score in every inning except for the fifth and sixth.

Game 1

Kelly Barnhill struck out 12 Vols batters over seven innings in a 5-0 shutout victory.

Barnhill gave up two hits to Tennessee and both happened to come from Brooke Vines. Amanda Lorenz hit a two-run triple to bring in Justine McLean and Jaimie Hoover as part of a four-run fifth inning that put the game out of reach. Kayli Kvistad also contributed with two solo home runs.

The attendance Friday night was 2,218, which broke the previous record of 1,935 that was set against Alabama two weeks ago.

The Vols travel to College Station next weekend to face the Texas A&M Aggies while Florida plays a non-conference series against North Texas.
